Alvida from Life in a…Metro

Time to write about a happening song or better “destined-to-be-happening” from a latest flick. 🙂

Music by Pritam, the track Alvida from Life in a…Metro seems to be composed to match up to the flavor of the season – Rock-based tunes. Considering the hugely popular Gangster from the same team of Anurag Basu and Pritam, this album carries some expectation of delivering good music again (plagiarized or otherwise 😉 )

I feel that Alvida has a slight resemblance to Bheegi Bheegi from Gangster and Chal chale from Woh lamhe. The song has two versions – Alvida and Alvida (reprise) sung by KK and Bangladeshi pop singer, James, respectively. My personal choice is KK’s version. The song starts off softly and builds up gradually. I prefer the beginning as the song gets bit noisy with heavy guitar interlude towards the end. Compared to KK one, James’s version is more vehement right from the beginning.

This song got good reviews; KK too got lotsa praises like this one:

KK shows his finesse once again and maintains his successful teamwork with Pritam in churning out the principal track of the film. The singer’s vocals change its tempo as the depressed feelings are highlighted with fast paced hard rock feel.

This song is about lost love; the unwilling acceptance of a forsaken lover and questions which arise in his mind as to why his beloved left him. Ardent singing by both the singers lives up to the demands of the lyrics by Amitabh Verma, which brings out impressively the pathos of a jilted lover and disbelief that his lover is no longer in his life.

Chupke se kahin, dheeme paaun se
jaane kis tarah, kis ghadi
aage badh gaye, humse raahon mein
par tum toh abhi thi yahin
kuch bhi na suna, kab ka tha gila
kaise keh diya alvida

As of now, I’ve heard this song only properly from the whole album, I’m sure there must be other good numbers worth repeated listening.

Not providing the download link of the song here. I’m quite amazed by the number of blogs with download links, even for the latest song without any concern of copyright issues. You can listen it here or here and decide the album is worth buying or not.

Here’s a short promo video of the song from Youtube (will update when a longer one comes up)

Read on for the full lyrics of Alvida ….

And this is to save time for those who came looking for lyrics 😀

Chupke se kahin, dheeme paaun se
jaane kis tarah, kis ghadi
aage badh gaye, humse raahon mein
par tum toh abhi thi yahin
kuch bhi na suna, kab ka tha gila
kaise keh diya alvida

Jinke darmiya gujri thi abhi
kal tak yeh meri zindagi
dono baahon ko, thandi chaanv ko
hum bhi kar chale alvida

Alvida, alvida, meri raahein alvida
meri saansein kehati hai, alvida
alvida, alvida, ab kehna aur kya
jab tune keh diya, alvida

Sunle bekhabar, yuun aankhein pher kar aaj tu chali jaa
dhundegi nazar humko hi magar har jagah
aisi raaton mein leke karvate, yaad hamein karna
aur phir haar kar kehna kyun magar, keh diya alvida alvida
koi puchhe toh zara, kya socha aur kaha alvida
alvida, alvida, ab kehna aur kya
jab tune keh diya, alvida

Hum the dil jale, phir bhi dil kahe
kaash mere sang aaj hote tum agar, hoti har dagar gulsitaa
tumse hai khafa, hum naaraaz hai, dil hai pareshaan
socha na suna tune kyun bhala keh diya alvida alvida
koi puchhe toh zara, kya socha aur kaha alvida
alvida, alvida, ab kehna aur kya
jab tune keh diya, alvida

kyun socha aur kahan alvida

dono baahon ko, thandi chaanv ko
hum bhi kar chale alvida

  3. I loved the track Alvida( reprise) by James. Its awesome. KK is my most favourite singer of all but I believe James did a superb job with the track, i find it better than KK’s track. the song is more of James type. The whole album is worth listening. It has different tracks for different moods and they totally captured me. In dino and Rishtey are both as good as Alvida. But some how I cant stop humming “alvida”, “alvida”. SUPERB work.

  4. It was like i was waiting for this song.. supurb .. man.. mind blowing..
simply.. the different tone and pace which it uses in the para is worth listining…
I think no one can sing these type of songs better then james…
    Thanks 4 creating such a nice song…
n ya thnxx 4 the lyrics also..:-)

  5. Fantastic song, especially the reprise version, james is absolutely natural with the music. Hope to hear more from him near future. KK’s version is also good, but unfortunately, i heard james’s version first so…

  6. well me to like the song Alvida. Pritam has done well enough by bringing this kinda rocking music composition.
Ofcourse KK sang the song well enough. i like his voice.
but i think the Bangladeshei singer James has done extremely well in this case bringing some rudeness in his vocal which is absolutely fit for the movie.because when some 1 is rejected or there is grief comes out u cant keep the hemony. the sound of ur heart can never be melodiuos at tht time.its a song for broken hearted person.here James is successfull.
but KK did a great job too.
want to see wht the Bangladeshi singer do in future.
    thnx to Pritam,Anurag Basu

  7. O ! Pritham, O James !! What a nice couple u both are! I hope u will keep ur work togather & gift us like Bheegi Bheegi from Gangster, Chal chale from Woh lamhe and last heven express Alvida (reprise). Hey Pritham, Hey Jemes! just tell me what up next?James ur realy a natural gift of music…

  8. I love humming the line “Alvida, Alvida…. ” and especially the line –
alvida, alvida, ab kehna aur kya
    jab tune keh diya, alvida

    simply superb

  9. I’ m from Nepal n I’m Rojan Shrestha
All songs of Life in a Metro is too cool.
O meri jaan was the most i liked.
Pritam and James and other guys sorry i don’t know others are really great. Songs of gangster was mindblowin. Great job.

  10. Hi…I am a guy of this age…but somehow has more leaning towards meaningful lyrics…Of late in the bid to have good rhythm the lyrics has suffered….But this…[i]is[\i] the perfect amalgam of great music, great rock and absolutely fantastic lyrics….Kudos to Pritam, kudos to K.K and dont know who is the lyricist…but muaaah…to him…
    Wah…yaar…what a song…and that what I call a song…
    Mindblowing….

  11. both pritam and james r great.
    so is pritam..
i think pritam is the most talented music director of bollywood of this time.
i dont want to compare james and kk.
personally i think kk is the best singer and most versatile singer in bollywood.but…….
“alvida” sung by james really touches the heart and it actually echoes the lyrics..and the feeling of the song comes out naturally….
so it’s better than the kk’s version..
and u will never be tired of hearing it

  12. I am a professional singer and musician. I personally find KK’s song having more prowess and finesse. James sometimes is weak in giving justice to the music.

  13. Thanks a lot.. I’m from Nepal and I’ve been lookin for the lyrics from quite some time.
I feel Alvida is just a great number and one of its kind bollywood had recently gave to us. KK = wonderful but James.. man.. he’s superb..
Ristey and Baatein are wonderful as well but ALVIDA too good!!!

  14. Its Unfair to Judge KK and James in a Same track. Some how I found KK is more melodius than James. But The think is Not only melody we need some think else……like MOJO… James keep it up man, U got the mojo now, sorry KK I like u but u need the mojo too….

  15. it’s so nice song that can’t express in a word. But please check why the song is not coming non stop ,it’s always cutting sound

  16. I can’t stop listening to this new singer James! Its probably 8 or nine millionth times. What a voice!!!!!!!!!!! I wish he had a full album.

  17. can you provide us with the chords and tabs of the song

I could sing it on the B minor scale…. but i think i am missing some notes there

  18. Well, i dont like n i even dont listen 2 hindhi songs..but i heard this song n i reallly really like it..gr8 work..

  19. hey this is really very gr8..it touches the bottom of the heart…its fulled with passios, emotions, love n rythin….very very very (endless) gr8 wrk!!

  20. Alvida is a hard rock oriented song which has an enthusiasm in itself. I like both the versions…KK has done a remarkable job as always…James is an amazing singer no doubt!! both the version are worth listening…. to be honest the best part in the movie is the MUZIC!!! good job done guys!!!

  21. Only song I’m hearing repeatedly these days. Burns me with RAGE and strong sense of helplessness for someone who could just forget everything..

kuch bhi na suna, kab ka tha gila
    kaise keh diya alvida

  22. hiiiiii alvida is hard rock song ……..keep on singing it is suggestion to the singer

    THANKS>>> KEEP UP THE BLOG!!!

  28. very nicely written and great sense of music….and thanks a ton for having all the things associated with the song – lyrics, video, audio at one place….reprise version would not sound as good if sung by anyone but james…

    cheers!

  29. i just want to say that the song alvida is the very frist hindi song that i come to love… im not indian and don’t quite understand the language but i can feel so much the emotion in the song… i always listen to it and im glad i finally found the lyrics… thanks so much!!!

  30. Personally I love to listen KK rather than any other in new songs but when i first listened James in the movie, it was fantastic. Its a real agony of broken heart. This song always become my real companion whenever I feel lonelyness. No doubt its a great team work by all, Pritam, Amitabh, James and KK. Thank U all of u for giving such a great gift for broken heart.

But my friend Tinkerbell, u have done a little mistake while writing the lyrics..

    Its not DONO BAAHON KO
Its LO UUN BAAHON KO, Thandi chhaanv ko…….

    Thank U

  31. pritam is my fav music director n james the band one of my best singers. there’s something in pritams compositions. he is so innovative. the arrangements are spectacular. i like this song very much. a very different song n a difficult one toocoz it involves scale changes. the best thing i like in this song is the way the electric sitar has been played. if im not wrong its played by someone in the band. its got a really exotic sound. it was used in the song bheegi bheegi from gangster throughout the song n now its becoming a trademark of james the band.
im just waitin for pritam n james combo to release their next n waiting for that electric sitar to rock!!!1

  32. hello if you like James from Bangladesh then there is another great news that one of the most talented popular Band star of Bangladesh, Hasan will sing in Bollywood soon.If you like to check his songs then the best collection i find is – http://www.youtube.com/hasanfan

    Here is the news:

As part of its label revamp, music major Universal has roped in Bangladesh’s renowned rock musician, Hassan.

Hassan, who has a formidable fan following in his home country, has been signed on by Universal on a three year contract. Part of a well known band Ark in the early nineties, Hassan went on to later form another band Jonmobhumi. Universal now plans to cut solo albums with the song writer- singer star as well as get him into mainstream Hindi, including Bollywood.

Ark was one of the first bands to popularise rock music in Bangladesh, and Hassan is credited with being ‘pillar of Bangla rock’, says Universal’s newly inducted Vice President – Content Artiste and Repertoire Rajeeta Hemwani. This is probably the first time that a Bangladeshi artiste has been signed on for a long term contract by an Indian music label. Universal Music, that has been lying low for a while, plans to induct a slew of new artistes into its fold, in an attempt to ‘create new sound’. To begin with, the label will promote Hassan aggressively, both in the commercial rock genre as well as in the Hindi film industry.

The news was posted on 20 Jun 2008 in radioandmusic web site.

  33. i love this song,,it jst a great song
per mjhe lgta h k ye song asli singer se ziada acha star voice of india kay irfan ne gaya he,,,,i like irfan vry much,,,,asli sunger ne bekar gaya hai

  34. Alvida is neither resemblance of Bheegi bheegi nor it followed the chal chale line. Bheegi bheegi’s original composer is a bengali rockstar naming gautam chattopadhaya while the chal chale is a passionate number, alvida can be graded as psychodelic rock. In western music psychodelic rock is very popular. One of the best instance of psychodelic rock is “november rain” from “Guns & Roses”. Alvida is actually inspired by “Let it be” from “The Beatles”. And psychodelic rock needs a voice which should have some roughness and in highs it needed to rise scales as possible. The pain is actually interpreted in psychodelic rock through high guitar notes & voice in peak.
In all the chapters JAMES is miles ahead than KK. I admit KK is a fantastic singer but in case of hard rock JAMES has the capability to teach anybody. You probably don’t no james. He is the best among hard rock singer BANGLADESH has ever produced. And I should tell you that BANGLADESH is miles ahead than INDIA in ROCK music. Even KK and Preetam will admit it.

  35. Just read that somebody has written about HASSAN. He is another popular singer of bangladesh and I’m telling you his voice is the bengali version of ENRIQUE IGLESIAS. You’ll just get surprised after listening. So just wait.

  36. hii…the song is superb…as everyone said…..
but i want to tell about a correction in lyrics………

The words you have written..”dono baanho ko………thandi chhanv ko……”

actually it is ” lo unn baahon ko…….thandi chhanv ko…….”

    rest is ok……..
    thanx……

  37. i love this song and someone related in life for achive his gold nearly but they cant achive that
    time feel this song.

  38. This Song Is Nothing But A Blatant Copy Of The Beatles “Let It Be”.Once Again Pritam Has Shown His Talent In Copying Northern Classics

  39. Possibly one of the best breakup songs over the last 10-15 years.
I cannot listen to it without crying a bucket load, and the theme line “jab tune keh diya alvida” is particularly painful for me as the last time we met, my beloved did not even say alvida

    1. It’s good to see a comment for a very old post in a virtually dead blog. I echo your thoughts on this song being a painful breakup song. But better to stay away from such song after a breakup 🙂
