Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan

In the past few years, Pakistani music has made a huge impact in Indian music industry. Two artists from across the border, which really caught my attention in recent times, are Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan.

ShafqatShafqat Amanat Ali is the vocal force behind the Pakistani band Fuzon and his voice is taking him places. Shafqat Amanat Ali is the son of one of Pakistan’s legendary classical singers, Ustad Amanat Ali Khan of the renowned Patiala Gharana.

I was mesmerized when I first heard the songs from the Sagar album by Fuzon. The songs from this album had modern arrangements with traditional melodies and had titles like Khamaj, Malhaar and Madhvanti to create an awareness of classical raagas among the youth. I got an instant liking of the songs when the music video hit the music channels.

Two of the songs from the album, Mora Saiyaan (Khamaj) and Tere Bina, were included in the Nagesh Kukunoor movie Hyderabad Blues 2. Mora Saiyaan is too tough to even hum for a non-singer like me but I can’t just get enough of listening to that number.

Recently, Shafqat Amanat Ali sang the popular number Mitwa from the Karan Johar movie Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna. This song stands apart from the rest of the track with his powerful and controlled singing and good lyrics. I’ve listened to it many times and it still finds its place on my most played list.

Yeh Honsla from the movie Dor is another good song rendered immaculately by the same singer. Though not commercially popular as his earlier numbers, this inspiring number is a treat for music lovers. I’m sure Nagesh Kukunoor is a fan of Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan ;) beacuse Shafqat’s songs have been featured in his two movies Hyderabad Blues 2 and Dor.

Rahat Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is the son of Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan and nephew of the great Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. He’s been known as the successor to the great Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Though Rahat does carry shades of Nusrat, he has a presence of his own which definitely leaves a mark.

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan captivated the listeners with his immensely popular number Mann Ki Lagan in Paap and Jiya Dhadak Dhadak from Kalyug. I fell in love with this melodic single ‘Mann ki Lagan’ the minute I heard it. ‘Mann Ki Lagan’ had become a bigger hit than the film itself.

One track Jiya Dhadak Dhadak from his album Charkha was featured in Kalyug, which I feel is absolutely beautiful love songs in recent time.

Most recent rendition by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is the song Naina from Omkara. Though the brilliance of this song was not realized by the masses, the superb rendition by the vocal God cannot go unnoticed.

Though these are the only three numbers I heard from Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, they are thousand times better than innumerable craps that are being churned out regularly by a particular music director in the name of Sufi songs.

I hope music lovers get to hear many more captivating numbers from these two singers and they get the recognition they truly deserve.

Update

Latest song by Rahat Fateh Anil Khan that caught my attention is ’Main jahaan rahoon’ from ’Namaste London’. Music is by Himesh Reshammiya and lyrics by Javed Akhtar. Though I’m not a fan of Himesh, I feel it’s one of his best composition. Rendition by Rahat is superb. Good that he thought of making Rahat sing this, not himself. ;)

Here’s an excerpt from an article from India glitz about this song:

Although, people will feast on ‘Chakna Chakna’, ‘Rafta Rafta’, ‘Dilruba’ and ‘Aanan Faanan’, I think the best song is ‘Main Jahan Rahoon’. Magnificently sung by Rahat Fath Ali Khan and ably supported by Krishna, this sufi song boasts of a good mix of classical effectiveness as well as wonderful strings arrangements in the background. Javed Akhtar’s lyrics are an asset for taking the song on a different level. Thankfully Himesh didn’t sing this number. For, although his voice is good but an overexposure of anything leads to a lack of novelty value.

Here’s hoping Himesh will extract good work from quality singers and use his own voice selectively.

So true :)

You would be delighted to know that Rahat FAK is featured quite prominently in Mel Gibson’s Apocalypto soundtrack (composed by James Horner). His haunting alaaps lend a melancholic yet dread-filled atmosphere to the film.

For those who turned up here looking for the lyrics of Main jahaan rahoon, I’m just posting it in the comments.

    Lyrics of Main Jahaan Rahoon

    (Main jahaan rahoon
    main kahin bhi hoon
teri yaad saath hai) – 2

    Kisi se kahoon
    ke nahi kahoon
yeh jo dil ki baat hai

Kehne ko saath apane ek duniya chalti hai
per chhupke is dil mein tanhaayi palti hai
    bas yaad saath hai
teri yaad saaath hai – 3

    Main jahaan rahoon
    main kahin bhi hoon
    teri yaad saaath hai

Kahin to dil mein yaadon ki
    ek suli gad jaati hai
kahin har ek tasveer bahut hi dhoondhali pad jati hai
koi nayi duniya ke naye rangon mein khush rehta hai
koi sab kuch paake bhi yeh mann hi mann kehta hai
kehne ko saath apane ek duniya chalti hai
per chhupke is dil mein tanhaayi palti hai
    bas yaad saath hai
teri yaad saaath hai – 3

Kahin to beete kal ki yaadein
dil mein hi utar jaati hai
kahin jo dhage tute to malaayen bhikar jaati
koi dil mein jagah nayi, baaton ke liye rakhta hai
koi apni palko par yaadon ke diye rakhta hai
kehne ko saath apane ek duniya chalti hai
per chhupke is dil mein tanhaayi palti hai
    bas yaad saath hai
teri yaad saaath hai – 3

shafqat amanat ali has one of the most controlled voices in the industry but sur is something which i think he has lacked in some of his songs..i am myself a classical singer and though you might feel that his songs are very difficult to sing they are actually not….THE two great pakistani singers of all time were nusrat and fateh ali khan saab and shafqat and even less rahat do not even compare to them…for example look at the you tube postings “nusrat improvising” and Shiv Kalyan by Fateh Ali khan Saab and you will get my point.

    @ pathikrit

You might be the better person to know about intricacy of classical singing as you said you are trained but I NEVER said that Shafqat Amanat Ali Khan and Rahat Fateh Ali Khan are the greatest singers of Pakistan. If you read carefully, I was talking about RECENT upcoming singers from Pakistan and that too about my personal favorites. Will check it out the youtube videos you mentioned. Thanks for that.

Rahat and Shafaqat are true gems in classical singing but their is always a margin for perfection. But i dont think that India itself doesn’t even have a single vocalist of this quality and talent with the same experience over years.

‘Main Jahaan Rahoon’ is very beautifully sung by Rahat and so is Mitwa by Shafaqat.

I believe that Pakistani Singers are having such a strong impact is because they have the good blend of both Hindustani and western styles. Nusrat Fateh Ali saab also experimented a lot in both Hindustani and western styles. But he Never gave up his roots even when singing in western style, which gives such a haunting and everlasting touch to his music.Shafaqt amant ali and Rahat fathe ali khan are good singers but I do not think they are really great. They are not as perfect as Nusrat but yes they are close. India does have singers of that caliber but hmm why can’t I think of any name other than long departed Mohd. Rafi saab, Manna Dey and Lata ji.

  16. 2007 September 25

I think that it is good that good singers from nighbourhood countries r comming cuz now it seems like India is getting good singers except for one who were before like A.R.Rehmaan(composer too) and latest Himesh(do…)…!!!

Rahat is a Marvellous Singer as he is a successor of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan!

Rahat is not new in Pakistani Music. It seems like he has been able to earn more recocgnition after he sang in Indian Films. I am not saying that Indian Films commercialized him on a larger scale, i think its more about the compositions and the overall quality of the song which includes instruments and recording standard. If he had that oppurtunity to work with such facilities in Pakistan, he would have made it there a long time back.

I Personally listened to Shafqat’s album more (Fuzon-Saagar) than i listened to Rahat because the overall music was very well created and presented. That has not been the case with Rahat. i wonder if the reason is that his Ustad, NFAK didnt teach him the commercial side of the Business. Not sure.

i think rahat needs a little more time. traditionaly both qawwals (who are essentialy peace loving sufi influenced singers) and muslim scholars attain a level of maturity in thier fields around 40′ish. it is roughly at this time that muslim schoars are often given the title of ’shaykh’ and it is also (generaly) at this kind of age that traditional qawwals prove themeselves in thier classical expertise, their robust voices, thier melodies, thier compostions etc. the term ‘ustad’ however can be gained at any age as long as the qawwal has the required knowldge at least theoreticaly. interestingly nusrat FAK was also hardly known before this age. give rahat another 5 years and we’ll love hin even more.

Well did anyone saw the SaReGaMaPa World Challenge 2007? Amanat Ali from Pakistan, who was amongst top 3 finalists, is really someone you should hear atleast once. He sang Mitwa and Ye Hosla with so much class. When he sang Ye Hosla, Vishal-Shekhar (music directors of Om Shanti Om) said that we are proud to be part of this contest only due to your performance. When he sang Mitwa all of the audience including judges like Bappi Lehri, Ismail Darbar, Himesh and Vishal-Shekar were giving him an standing ovation. Jagit Singh (The Great Ghazal King) said about him that he is way above the level of this competition.

He is singing in Sanjay Gupta’s next Movie “Ali Baug” and Farah Khan has also offered him to sing for “Shah Rukh Khan” in her next movie.

Wondering who is this singer? Watch him at http://www.amanatali.net. You will get all your answers. I bet…
